A little walk up the backstreets from exit 6 of Gangnam station, there's a totally different feel to alot of other areas in Seoul. The backstreets are lined with cafes, bars, clubs and restaurants which are metropolitan and stylish. There's a host of different nationality restaurants, more than I have seen anywhere else in the city and the decor is super cool in every establishment.
We chose Julio's, a Mexican place. It was a great experience. At first, we had to wait 15 minutes for a table, but that was only because it was so popular. After going in, we were pleasantly suprised, the decor is stripped down and concrete. It's not harsh feeling but more cool and fashionable instead. The place isn't huge but there are a number of tables and they could accommodate our group of 5 fine. All the staff were incredibly frienly and helpful and spoke fantastic english. Menu-wise there's a selection of all the usual mexican fare: burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, tacos, nachos and so forth. There are also little sharing burgers that looked really good. I went for the teriyaki beef burrito with a side of nachos and gaucamole. For 10,500 won, I thought it was reasonable.
Beers and booze are more pricey, but that's because they have imported beer, San Miguel and Eerdinger. I stuck to a plain old Korean bottled lager. They aslo do huge sharing margaritas that were good value.
Our food tasted AMAZING! Defintely the nicest Mexican I've ever had anywhere. The portions are pretty small though and you literally get what you ordered, with no salad or any extras or anything. I was really happy with that, as I was completely full after. The burrito was really nicely arranged with a dressing drizzled around the plate.
I loved the feel and the buzz of the place, and it was more like being in London or another huge city than anywhere we've experienced in Seoul.
We'll definitely come back here, and try the places around here too in future.
