Now I am normally a fan of Market Town Tavern pubs. Arcadia in Headingley and the also newish Veritas in town are both very good, but I am not so keen on this one.

To be fair, I don't think we went in at the most opportune time. About 4pm on a Thursday afternoon for a farewell drink with my yum reviewing chums Jen and Liam (now our South Korean correspondents) but the place was deadly quiet. I understand why they have no music, but it would be beneficial when it is that quiet, we felt that we had to keep our voices down and it was a little oppressive. When another friend walked in to join us, her immediate reaction was to make a face and indicate how uncomfortably silent it was. The room is huge which doesn't help, with big fish bowl windows and you have to do a big march across the void when going to the loo. The décor is OK, the usual beer advert prints are nice, but the carpets and furniture are superbeige and the floor is all laminate. Looks very dull and chainy.

Drinks selection is very good, as is the rule in these establishments. I had a lovely mild. It always cheers me up when a place has a mild on. And the atmosphere may be very different when it is busier on a weekend.
